For professional reasons, I would like to be able to record into my Mac Pro a scene from a movie that has been recorded in my cable system’s DVR. So that I could then convert it to QuickTime and work with it within my computer’s software. I’ve tried a few things but haven’t been able to get the HDMI into my computer. Is this possible to do? Does HDMI use some kind of copyright protection system?
I’m using the latest iOS 6 10 on a Mac Pro late 2013.
Thanks, JR

It is possible, but you will need hardware to do it. I tried using the Matrox MX02 Mini for just such a purpose. I had hoped I could use it to take HDMI input directly from a camera. But in practice it wasn't compatible with most software and it was much easier to just get a very good webcam. I tried a BlackMagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder device and had similar issues with software. But you may have better luck since you are using recorded videos, rather than live.
Note that there may also be a problem with the HDMI source as some sources will be smart enough to not let them work as input to hardware like this. I'd imagine cable DVRs would try hard to prevent this.
