I'll start the conversation off by saying that I don't use any. I let OS X Lion do its own thing (it has built-in protection).
I would say that if you suspect a problem, then investigate that problem. If you don't suspect a problem, then there is no action to take.
You can see MacMost's section for virus and malware information: http://macmost.com/virus-and-malware
One thing to keep in mind if you decide to purchase some scanning software. They are often overzealous, reporting minor annoyances like browser cookies as "problems" and scaring people. After all, they don't seem to be worth anything if they just return "nothing found" every time you scan.
I am still using Snow Leopard (OXS 6) for my 4-year old iMac. My Mac Book Pro now has Lion (OSX 7) installed, so thanks for that bit of information. What suggestions do you have for slightly older computers?
Snow Leopard also has built-in anti-malware support from Apple. But updating it to Lion, if possible, might be a good idea for the long run.
Yes i would not bother with programme`s that would run a scan for malware. This is how they do it- Example- Warning notice suddenly appears scanning your computer found numerous of viruses, and other bugs. One mistake it`s a programme for windows not a Mac. Gary is quite right about the cookies. The thing that annoys me is when you are doing something on a Mac there are lots of pop ups on a Mac like do you want to really leave this page.
Just recently a bug had getting into the Apple system. I think it came when you are using Flash or Jarva. The information is all on the Apple site telling you what to do. My answer is just keep your software up to date. If you are downloading some software make sure that it is from a trusted site.
