Are you sure you have one of the iMacs that allows this? I know the current models can, but I don't think it will work on a 2008 iMac.
For the new models, you need a Mini DisplayPort cable. Basically one that connects to the Thunderbolt port on your current Mac, and then to the external display port on your iMac. Just look at the ports and buy the cable that matches them. A Thunderbolt cable should work too, as that is a Mini DisplayPort cable with even more ability.
But I'm fairly sure that it won't work on a 2008 iMac.
Just to add, using an iMac as a monitor is fine every now and then. But if you plan to use it in that mode regularly, remember that it will draw a lot more power than a simple monitor since all the computer's innards will be on even if you're just using it as a display. That will add to your monthly electric bill, and is generally wasteful.
