I don't think there is a previous recipients list in the Messages app. It will pick up suggestions from any saved history you have. So if you look in the list of conversations in the left sidebar, if the recipient is present in a conversation, then you'll see it as a suggestion. Also, of course if the recipient is in your Contacts, then it will be listed.
