How Do I Export Emails From My Mac To an External Drive?

I’m trying to save important emails, but want them off of my computer. I would like to put them on an external drive, but what I’ve tried isn’t working because once I get export them there , it can’t be opened. I’m running the latest update of macOS High Sierra 10.13.3. Is there anyway for me to save these emails and get them off of my computer? Thanks

It depends on how you want them saved and how many there are. If there are just a few important messages, maybe File, Export as PDF, and save them that way. Then you have PDF copies of these emails which you can open easily anywhere.

You can also use File, Save as and select Rich Text Format which would give you smaller files, with some formatting, but may not be good enough quality depending on what you are doing.

The easiest method is just to drag and drop the messages from your list in the Mail app. Then you get .eml files. When you double-click these they should open up in the Mail app as an email message and look pretty much the same as the original. You can also drag and drop .eml files on to the Mail app icon in the Dock to open them.

You said that you are trying some method now, but the result can't be opened? Which method are you trying? What happens when you try to open them?
