How Do I Get iPhone 14 Pro Max To Have an All Night Display?

Hi Gary – I have just purchased an iPhone 14 Max Pro and wanted to use it as a replacement for my bedside clock as Apple Watch can on its side. But in the sleep focus, to turn the watch display off (I use the watch on now to get sleep information), the screen goes blank. No constant on. Is there a way to use the iPhone 14 as a bedside clock at all? ie show the time all night? Thanks

I want to do this to replace a bedside clock and iPhone is on charger too (ie it’s on a stand). This would then works wherever I am, hotels etc.

In the Settings app, go to Focus. Then select the focus mode you want.

In that Focus mode, tap Options. Then turn on Enable Dim Lock Screen.

But I think in your case you are having trouble because you are trying to combine the default Sleep focus with this. It doesn't work in Sleep focus. One of the special things that focus mode does is to save battery life in a variety of ways, including disabling the always-on display. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213435

So maybe don't use Sleep focus if you want this. Use a custom one instead.

But note another item from that page of when the display goes off: "You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)."

I think that this tells us that the always-on display isn't meant for what you are trying to do. I think it is meant for sitting on a desk while you are working and such, so you can glance at it, not to be used as an all-night clock. But try it out and see. That item is kinda vague. How long is "a while?" They could mean an hour, or 3 days. And the whole section on that page is under "save battery life" which shouldn't apply if your iPhone is plugged in.

Thanks Gary. Is there still a way if I create a new 'Night' Focus(not Sleep) to have the watch go to a blank screen to save battery life on the watch?

Jonathan: That's a setting on the Watch, right? Settings, General, Activate on Wrist Raise?

Just found on iPhone Watch app. Watch does not follow iPhone Focus. So I will manually set watch to Sleep tonight (hopefully screen off) and iPhone to new Night Focus. Using your idea of Dim Lock Screen. I will let you know. Thanks Gary!

Tried a new background. Set Dim Mode on for this mode - Night. set to automatically come on at 10:30 to 7am. Unlinked watch from Mirror Focus from phone. Sleep data ok, watch display went blank. All good. The phone stays on for maybe 30mins? but stops and goes blank overnight - as you thought. So I can't see a way yet to use iPhone as a night stand rather than clock. Maybe an update in future iOS in sleep mode to have a dimmed always on display?? Thanks anyway for your thoughts.

Bought iPhone 14 Pro Max for always on display, to replace bedside desk clock, very disappointing to discover it will not stay on overnight while mag charging. Should be a simple fix, hopefully.

I use the app White Noise for this. Has a nice simple dimmable clock and stays on all night in sleep focus mode.

I wanted my 14 pro max for 24/7 bedside clock…. As everyone, tried everything! What finally gave me this AOD instead of SOD was deleting the Health App and Health Data, as this Health App has its own Sleep Schedule (focus) within. My 14 Pro Max has been on 24/7 for 3 weeks thus far! Only drawback I find, I lost my alarm clock that was imbedded within the Health App, and of course the Health App is gone as well. Bottom line, the Health App and it’s sleep schedule focus is the culprit..!
