Sometimes the images on my desktop do not display in total. For example, there are a number of PDF’s, at times they say simply PDF with the description underneath while other times the actual image of the PDF is displayed. Is there a way to refresh the look without rebooting?

That is concerning. I wonder what could be causing the problem. Do you have any special PDF software installed?
One thing you may want to try is to simply force the Finder to restart. One way to do that is to hold both the Control and Option keys down, and click on the Finder icon in the Dock. You should see a Relaunch option in the list.
The only PDF software is Acrobat Reader. I tried your suggestion to no avail.
I wonder if there is something about those particular PDF files that makes them harder to do as previews. There are so many different ways to make PDFs and so much that can be inside them.
