Are you using iMovie? You never mention what software you are using. But I'll assume iMovie.
If that is the case, then it is made very easy for you. If you go to Share, Export you'll get several options, all on a chart. You'll see iPad listed right there as a column in that chart. Just use the highest setting you can that works for the iPad.
