What Are My File Vault Password Recovery Options/Limitations?

I’m trying to decide whether to use File Vault or not. If I choose to use my iCloud Account to retrieve a lost password, but not have wifi, am I just stuck. Wouldn’t it be safer to generate a recovery password that isn’t online?

Just trying to weigh all the options…

While I rarely forget passwords, it is possible. I need to know my recovery options if I can’t access the internet.

First, consider that it is rare to every need your FileVault recovery password. It would really only come up with something goes wrong, like you forget your user account login or the Mac breaks in such a way that you have to pull the drive out and access it from another computer. Hopefully nothing like that will ever happen to you.

Second, keep in mind that if you opt to do an offline password you now have something you can lose. It is definitely the less safe of those two options.

If you happened to have something bad happen where you needed your FileVault recovery method, and you simply didn't have Internet access at that time, you could just go to a place with Internet access. I don't see that as being a big deal. Seems like using iCloud recovery is still the better option.

Can BOTH options be used simultaneously?

Taylor: No, I don't think so.
