While most Macs have trackpads, most users never bother to learn how to use some of the gestures available. You can see which ones you have available in System Preferences, along with videos that show you how to perform the gestures. Each has a keyboard shortcut you can use instead if you prefer.

For Notification Center: put two fingers off the right side of your trackpad and pull them left until they are onto your trackpad. It doesn't matter where your cursor is, it only has to do with the physical location of your fingers from off the edge of the trackpad onto it. I haven't done this with standalone trackpad, only with my integrated laptop one, so it is probably easier to do with a level surface off the edge. Watch the video in system preferences.
