Sharing Screenshots and Pictures With Imgur

If you need to share a single image quickly and easily, without using iCloud, Dropbox or some other service you have set up, you can use Imgur.com. You can upload an image without signing up and then use that to share you images in emails and message boards where images may not normally be supported.

Video Transcript: Let's say you want to share an image online but you don't want to setup a whole iCloud photo gallery, you don't have a DropBox account, you don't have any easy way to share an image. You just need to share this one image really quickly. Like, for instance, I get this sometimes when somebody wants to share an image, a screenshot of their Mac because they're asking about some sort of problem or some sort of how to technique and they want to show me something. Perhaps you want to send just a single photo to somebody but sending it through email is not a good idea. You just want to post it somewhere temporarily so that they can see it.
Well, the site that most people use for this is called Imgur and it's spelled i m g u r. You can just go to imgur.com and you'll end up at a screen like this. Here you can not only upload an image but you don't even have to signup to do it. You can do it without signing up at all. 
You just go to the New Post here, you can see that I'm not signed in, and it allows you to drag and drop an image here. So let's give it a try. 
If I go to say, about this Mac, and then I go to the Memory section and let's say I want to share this with somebody because I want to ask about if I have the right memory installed or something. 
So I'm going to do a screenshot. In this case I'm going to use Shift Command 4 and then spacebar to select the window and it'll save this nice screenshot right here of that window. So now I want to Share that. I just drag it in here and it uploads it. I can give it a title or not, description or not, and I can share to the Community. I don't want to do that here. So what I want to do here is just basically use none of these options but Copy this Link. 
Now that I've copied this link I can close this window here, I can open up a new browser window for instance in Safari like that. If I paste that link in there and go to it you can see it takes me right to that image. 
So I could in an email to somebody say have them check out this image and just post that link there. Then when they click on that link in the email they'll be able to go to that page and see what I posted. So a quick and easy way to share things with people when there's really no other way to do it.

Thanks for another useful video — I'd heard about Imgur but didn't know much about it. The quick share aspect is certainly useful. I'm wondering how it differs from Instagram, and how the usage/benefits differ between them as social media?

On a related note, when I need to share a large file, such as a video or large folder, which would clog up my email and would be clunky on Dropbox, I use Wetransfer. It works in a similar way to what you've outlined above, but with time-limited access.

Nice video - as always. One thing to be aware of if you choose to make the image public you grant imgur an irrevocable licence (with right to sublicense) your image. Easy to miss in their T&Cs - but of course does not apply to the example your gave.

Sue: I think Instagram is mobile app only, for uploads anyway. At least it was the last time I checked. But it definitely requires setting up an account first, which Imgur does not.
