Can anyone recommend a pdf converter (to native file, word, excel etc) for a MacOS High Sierra 10.13.3. A paid app is also ok as I need it for work to convert .pdf docs for editing.

I've never used one, but maybe someone else has a recommendation. A search in the Mac App Store shows a few, so I would start there.
You can always copy and paste text from Preview of Adobe's free reader into a new document if the text is what you are after. Or, of course, go back to the source of the PDF if that is possible and ask them for the source file.
If someone in the workflow is producing PDFs and expecting you to edit them, then you may want to figure out how to change that. I'd image a PDF converter will only work so well, especially if spreadsheets are involved.
It can be performed as in apple script, though I tested only with word.
Wondershare PDF Element does the conversion and its paid app.
