In some websites or Mac apps the volume in my earphones is too low. Is there a way to turn up the volume? Do I need some sort of portable amplifier the earphones can plug into? Most times the volume is fine, but certain websites, or apps don’t put out enough.

I assume you have turned up the volume on your system, correct? If this is audio on a website, is there a control there for that volume as well? If so, did you try to turn that up? For videos, for instance, there is usually a volume control at the bottom with other controls.
Have you tried other earphones? Maybe those are old or worn? Maybe then need to be cleaned? I'd try another set of earphones or maybe ones that are better for you (over-ear, on-ear, in-ear, etc) before resorting to any of the software extensions that claim to "boost" output.
