How Do I Read an AVI File On My Mac?

How do I read an AVI digital file on my MacBook Pro?

I have been sent a digital file that has old time video of my family. I am not able to read it on my Mac book pro.

Did you try to open it in QuickTime Player? That should work for many AVI files. But like most video files, the simple file extension doesn't really tell the whole story. There are many types of AVI files, with different compression and settings inside.

If you can't get it to play in QuickTime Player, a popular alternative is VLC. https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
