I can’t seem to find out how to use the return key when writing emails. The keyboard doesn’t come up and I don’t know a command to get line spacing.

If your goal is to start a new line of text in the body of the message, just start writing below the current line. If the text is added to the previous line, you didn't go low enough. On my iPad mini I have to write about 2 inches below the previous line for it to start a new line. But the text doesn't remain where I write, it jumps up to be under the previous line. You also need to start writing on the left. If you start writing in the middle of the screen it will add to the previous line no matter how far down on the page you are. Experiment with that until you get the hand of it.
In addition, you can use a the scribble tools and access a Return button there, and a virtual keyboard with a Return, backspace and access to other characters.
Look for the pencil button at the bottom of the screen. It will only appear when you are writing. So if you don't see it, "scribble" something first. Then tap it. Now you get tools that include a Return button you can tap. There is a setting for whether this stays, or hides itself after a few seconds.
If you tap the Keyboard button there, you'll get a small virtual keyboard you can use. It includes a Return button and a backspace key, and access to symbols, etc.
You can also bring up the regular full-sized virtual keyboard at any time. Just tap the bottom of the screen with your finger. Then "scribble" again wi the Pencil to hide it and return to writing.
Thank you for this. However, the tool bar on the bottom does not show the keyboard or return key. Any other thoughts?

Gary, thanks for the reply. I love your video's by the way! I don't see what you see. I saw that in the videos but for some reason it does not come up on my iPad. It's more of a shortened version of that. I can take a screen shot but don't know how to send that too you on this system.
Richard: You can use a cloud service of your choice to share the image (reply with a link) or a free site like https://imgur.com to do it. Also, which version of iPadOS are you using, which iPad, and which Apple Pencil?

Richard: That's not what I get at all. I wonder if it is because you are on an older iPad with the older pencil? Does at least the main suggestion above (write way below the current line, all the way to the left) work for you?
Gary, the keyboard does seem to come up after 2 or 3 attempts. Maybe I pressing on the wrong part of the screen at the bottom. I'm going to order the 2nd generation pencil to see if that makes a change. Do you recommend me upgrading to the new iPad Air?
Richard: Note that the Pencil you use depends on the model of iPad. You can't simply use a Pencil 2 on an old iPad or a Pencil 1 on a new iPad. They have to match.
Gary, yes, I checked that. I have the iPadAir 3rd Generation. There is a new one just released. I was wondering if you think it's worth purchasing. It'll be $899 for what I want in it. I'm sure it depends upon what I use it for. I use it for light use actually but, like you, I prefer to have the newest, hottest products...yet I don't want to waste money.
