When my headset is connected in the iPhone 4 I cannot hear incoming textones for my messages.
But when an incoming call cones in I do hear the ringtone. Therefore I often miss messages.anyway to make the sound audible for SMS that I receive when headset is connected. ?

Do you mean the text tone plays, but though the headphones, not the speaker? Or do you mean the text tone does not sound at all, either in the speaker or the headphones?
I would simply turn on vibration for incoming messages, so then your iPhone would vibrate and make a slight buzz.
Text tones play through the headsets. But ringtones are heard even through speakers. I'd like the text tones too to be heard through speakers. As turning on vibrate does drain Battery more !
That's just the way it works.
I wouldn't worry about the battery. You'd have to get tons and tons of texts for that to make a noticeable difference.
