iPhone/iPad cannot be synced – unknown error (-27)

Hi Gary,

Keep up the great work on the awesome podcasts!

I have been experiencing an intermittent error with my iPhone and now occasionally with my new iPad that reads “iPhone cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-27).”

If I hit sync again it works ok and when I get the error it seems to be near the end of the sync process.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've never even heard of an error -27. That's odd. Can you visit an Apple Store and ask? I'd love to know what they say.

So far Apple's suggestion (I called Apple Care) was to try different USB ports to see if the problem still exists. I have had the error when I was plugged into a powered Belkin USB hub as well as when I have been plugged directly into my 17" MacBook Pro.
I'll experiment with different ports and see what happens.

My problem is a little different. I have a first gen IPhone. Sync's with Outlook (2003) fine until about a month ago. I have tried everything including a complete uninstall and re-install if ITunes. I even "restored" my IPhone. Still no sync with Outlook calendar or contacts. Did a web search and followed every tip I could find. Nothing works. I used to "see" a "calendar" in ITunes so you could check the box to sync a "separate calendar" but no separate calendar appears.

    Any ideas?

My -27 error problem seems to only happen if I have the device selected in the iTunes sidebar. I need to continue to test this to make sure it is not just a coincidence, but it seems like if I have anything else selected in the sidebar I do not get the error. Seems kind of strange.

My last post was not correct - I still was getting the error until I think I figured it out. I was not getting the error anymore on my iPad and the only difference was that I had the iPhoto option to include videos checked on the iPhone but not on the iPad. When I had it checked on the iPad, I got an error message saying that some of the videos were incompatible (I'm assuming from my Kodak digital camera). Since I have unchecked the option to include videos in the iPhoto sync with the iPhone I have not received the error. I hope this really fixed it this time.
