What procedure or software do you recommend for recovering a deleted iPhoto Library?
Just recovering the photos that were in it would be fine.
My machine has much more than twice the disk space than I’ve ever used, so there’s some chance that most if not all of it has never been overwritten.

So, I'm guessing that you don't have Time Machine running? Bad idea. Well, you probably know that now :)
Unfortunately, file recovery software can be expensive. I've never tried it on the main hard drive, but twice I've used File Salvage (http://macmost.com/filesalvage.html) to recover photos from a damaged camera SD card -- and it worked great.

That worked pretty well.
My only complaint is that even though I only asked for photos to be recovered it also recovered many videos, which I didn't need, and overwhelmed my other device.
