Where Are My Options Regarding Downloading Attachments In Mail?

Apparently in Sierra > Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information I should be able to see options regarding downloading attachments, but I don’t have these. I have a POP account, not IMAP – is that why?

Yes. POP is old-fashioned email. Instead of interacting with the server like modern email (iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, IMAP) you are simply downloading messages from the server. You probably don't get those options because each email is being downloaded from the server to your Mac and then deleted from the server. So there is no way to then go back and retrieve the attachment later on.

POP will give you many other problems too. Services should have retired it 20 years ago. POP doesn't work well with the multiple devices we all use now (Mac + iPhone + iPad) as one device may get the message and the others never see it. You should avoid POP at all costs and switch to IMAP. If your email provider doesn't offer IMAP, you should switch email providers.

In fact, you should avoid ISP email altogether if that is what you are using. This is one of many reasons. See Five Reasons Not To Use Your ISP’s Email Service.
