Why Are My Internet File Downloads Suddenly Left With a .download Extension?

Hi, I cannot work why when I download a file from a link on a website I am suddenly being left with the .pdf and a .pdf.download file.

In some cases the .pdf is readable but I have had the situation where it is not readable and I seem unable to delete the .pdf.download version because of the following error

The operation can’t be completed because one or more required items can’t be found.
(Error code -43)

Thank you for your help.

That is usually the extension when the download is in progress and hasn't been fully completed yet. Perhaps these are particularly large files that need more time? What does it say when you click the "Show Downloads" button at the top of Safari?

I would imagine that if the download is interrupted or the server does something wrong that the file is just left there like that. Maybe try restarting your Internet/Wi-Fi hardware? Or maybe your Mac too?
