i have 3 movies made in avi formet they are in a folder on my desk top how to drag them in i movies

If they won't import into iMovie, then you need to convert them first. Use a program like VLC, FFMpegX or MPEGStreamclip to do that.
i have VLC how to convert ? thanks
Open the .avi file in VLC. Choose File, Streaming/Export Wizard..., then choose Transcode/Save to file, etc.
i converted the file in VLC and saved it on desk top now it does not open saying it cannot open its not a movie file ???????? now what went wrong
Sounds like you did not export it in the right format. What format did you use? Try another one. Standard mp4 should work.
Try getting hold of a great little utility called VisualHub, it makes video conversion a breeze, unfortunetly the development for the app has since been stopped but you can still find it on places like http://www.download.com or if you google around for it. Once you've done that you can convert the avi's and import them straight into Itunes, from there you can easily add them into iMovie. VisualHub made video conversion a breeze. No complicated settings to mess around with it really was just drag n drop. good luck
I looked for Visual Hub on that site but it's no longer available. The creators of that app have developed iSquint for the iPhone instead. Anyway, I posted in another thread that I had tried converting with VLC and a couple of other converters and had the same problem. The file generated would not open in QT, or if it did open, there was no audio. I tried MPEG Streamclip and was able to create both a .mov file and an .mp4 file, and import the .mov file into iMovie with no problems, the first time I used it, and without even reading the User Guide. There were a lot of settings and terminology I didn't understand, so I may not have used the optimum settings for what I wanted, but I was really happy with how easy it was to use. I plan to read the User Guide to become more knowledgeable about the settings and will use MPEG Streamclip for all my video conversions. I just did not have good results with VLC, so if you're having trouble with it, try MPEG Streamclip.
