MacMost Now 19: 2007 in Review

Gary Rosenzweig takes a look at Apple news in 2007, including the release of the iPhone, Leopard and the high stock price.

Video Transcript: Hi. This is Gary Rosenzweig with MacMost Now. It's the last day of 2007 and it's my belief that 2007 was a pivotal year for Apple. It changed more than ever before.  Let's take a look at all the events of 2007.
The year got off to a start with a huge bang at the MacWorld Keynote of January 9. Not only did Steve Jobs announce the iPhone, which dominated the year's news and Apple Tech, but also he changed the name of the company from Apple Computer to just  Apple. In addition he also announced Apple TV. About a month later Steve Jobs made a blog post to the Apple website saying that he didn't really think DRM, digital rights management, was a good idea anymore.  And sure enough a few months later we had DRM-free songs from EMI Music at the iTunes music store. Problem was they were a little bit more expensive and they also were available from other sources. But at least it was a start.  So from that point on until June 29th all anybody talked about was the iPhone. What was it going to be like when it came out? All these rumors flew around and finally on the 29th people lined up all over the country for their iPhones. And we did as well and when we got them everybody seemed to love them. Well. Not everybody. But a lot of us did anyway. 
But the iPhone news wasn't over yet because there were a whole bunch of other rollouts in other countries still to come. And in the US the iPhone took a big price drop. Just two months later it became $200 cheaper. Everybody who'd already bought an iPhone was quite upset and Apple came back with a $100 gift certificate for everybody that had purchased an iPhone at the full price. One of the things people didn't like about the iPhone was that it was tied to an AT&T phone plan. Not everybody needed a new phone. But in September, Apple came out with a new which called the was a new that looked and acted  kind of like the iPhone, even down to the internet access with a web browser. 
But 2007 wasn't all about the iPhone. It also saw the release of Apple's latest and greatest operating system Leopard. OS X.5 added lots of new features and really showed up Microsoft with their release of Vista which was a bit of a flop. 2007 also saw the release of the iPod Nano, a really small, compact iPod video player that seems to be the most popular of the iPods right now. It also saw some great things for Apple stock price. Just after MacWorld in January the stock price hit $100 a share for the first time. By the end of the year it's already touching $2000 a share. So Apple has doubled in value. Now that we're at the end of the year, we've got mostly rumors about next year's MacWorld.  Will these rumors be true? Will there be an ultra laptop? Maybe a tablet? Maybe some new upgrades to Apple TV? Maybe some new updates to an iPhone? Will 2008 top 2007? Only time will tell next year.
