The first major update to macOS Tahoe brings almost nothing new, but hopefully fixes some bugs that were bothering people. It does add a switch for Liquid Glass which does almost nothing at all and it also makes the Spotlight App mode a little wider.

Screen savers have been moved into Wallpaper in System Settings. Choosing a screen saver that matches your wallpaper has advantages. You can also now have a custom clock appear. But setting up Notifications to show while your screen is locked, you can get more utility out of it.

While most Desktop Widgets just present information and allow you to click to jump to the app, some will let you actually do things like start calls, check Reminders items and play podcasts.

In apps like Notes, Journal and Mail there is no built-in way to use templates. But don't let that stop you. You can just duplicate an item, copy template text from a document, use Text Replacements, or even use Shortcuts to add basic template functionality where none exists.

With the latest iPhone models you can use the built-in camera app to record video with both the back and front cameras, allowing you to appear alongside the action.

A useful new feature in Apple Maps in iOS 26 is Visited Places. It allows you to see the places that Maps has noted that you visit, and use it to recall locations and keep notes. It isn't a security threat as some news outlets would lead you to believe.

Apple Intelligence can answer questions, and Shortcuts can rename files. You can combine these to create something that automatically renames PDF files based on their contents. Things like this that can actually do things on your devices are where we are headed with AI.

With Launchpad gone in macOS Tahoe, many users just want a way to launch apps from a categorized list. One way to do that is by organizing aliases in a folder and accessing them with a Shortcut.

Two new features in iOS 26 let you use your AirPods to start and stop video recording and allow you to use the AirPods microphones for audio. This works with AirPods 4, or AirPods Pro 2 and 3.

You can set folder icons to use little symbols or emoji characters. But it turns out you can go beyond just the symbols offered and use any SF Symbol or character, even multiple characters!

I had hoped that the Journal app on macOS, iOS and iPadOS could be used for things like work journals, diet records, reading logs and other things. It can, but the experience isn't smooth and it probably isn't quite ready for that yet.

In macOS Tahoe you can not only easily customize Control Center, but you can add more than one. So you can organize your controls and buttons into sets, and even add actions not directly supported through Shortcuts.

A new feature in iOS 26 is Spatial Scenes, where you can turn 2D photos into 3D. But what's the purpose of this special effect? One purpose is to use your own photos as 3D wallpapers.
