I recently upgraded to iTunes 9 and noticed that Genius Mixes was not listed under the Genius pull down. Thinking that perhaps this was an issue with the installation I deleted and re-installed iTunes.
However, this didn’t correct the problem. Is there a setting that I am not aware of that needs to be activated. This issue also stumped the folks at the Genius Bar in my local Apple Store. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Is Genius On? Under the "Store" menu, select "Turn on Genius." Otherwise, the mixes never get made.
Hi Gary,
Genius is on under the store menu. It does appear in iTunes as a pull down along the left
side navigation. However, "Genius Mixes" is missing from under it.
Is there a music library threshold (number of songs) that must be reached before the mixes are listed?
Thanks,
Try turning Genius off and then back on again. But if you do have too few songs, then not only will Genius mixes not be able to work, but they wouldn't be of any use. There is no set number, because it needs to match songs of similar styles and genres. But you probably should have at least several hundred songs to see useful results, I imagine.
mine is on, but on my ipod when i select start genius it says its not available for every song !!! Im really frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks,
I'll give the on/off switch of genius another go later this evening.
There are 117 songs, most purchased from iTunes in my macbook iTunes library. I would think this would be enough songs to have a mix.
Looking forward to getting your book on Tuesday. Amazon says it's a day away.
No success!
Genius mixes are a no show. This is so strange.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm thinking that 117 songs is too few -- especially if they are different genres.
That's what I suspected. Thanks!
I am having the same problem. They did show at one time and I was enjoying them. Then the screen was blank one day. When I turned them off and on to fix the blank screen, they disappeared comletely. I have tried everything to get them back with no luck. I have over 4000 songs so that isn't my issue as well as the fact they were working at one time.
I've had exactly the same situation - available -> blank screen -> no Genius Mixes. Very sad as I really enjoyed Genius Mixes.
Anyone found a solution?
Same problem, tried all of the suggestion I could find. Still not working!
Same problem here !!! Blank screen, then item totally disappeared after turning off and back on "Genius". :-(
I am having the same problem as you guys too! I don't know what happened. One day I was enjoying the mixes, then I decided to put more songs on my ipod touch. Then all mixes except for metal disappeared, and even THAT one would just freeze on one song and play it repeatedly. Now the genius mixes spot isn't anywhere on my ipod OR my library! I tried turning Genius on and off a few times, and even got rid of my library folder and rebuilt it from the backup. Nothing anyone has suggested from any site works! <:(
Try this. I was having the same issues as were written above, and I did the following. It SEEMS to be what fixed it for me.
Go into "Music" under "Library" in itunes. Click "Edit > Select All". Right click on the total selection of music. Select "Check Selection". Then click "Store > Update Genius".
After I did this, my genius mixes showed up on the left.
Thank you for the tip! It worked!!! I thought I had tried everything and was ready to give up. You are a genius! (pardon the pun!)
Thanks Daniel! Totally worked!
Daniel, thanks man worked great appreciate the tip.Take care---Bryan
A year late, but after 3 hours of $crewing around on Apple forums, found Daniels solution here and it WORKS. My Genius Mix has now reappeared! Dan is the man.
OMG! That really worked.
Daniel, you are a real GENIUS!
I contacted Apple Customer Support about 5 times, and they didn't know the solution...
Thank you sooooo much for your help, I won't forget it man!
THANKS again
Magic! THANK YOU.
I tried that twice and it didn't work. :-(
I closed iTunes, reactivated Genius and then replaced the file "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" with an older version, which I saved at a time, when Genius-Mixe still worked.
Unfortunately, Daniel's fix didn't work for me either. Any other suggestions? I regularly used Genius Mixes.
Same problem here... I also have tried Daniel solution and it didn't work... Turn on/off Genius several times, and nothing... It's so bad, because I basically use Genius Mixes, I don't bother picking the songs...
Didn't work for me either..
me neither UGHHHHHH!!!! HELP I am going on vacationnnnn!!!
Let's share a little more info and see if we can find anything in common. I'm using a Mac Pro with 4G memory, OS X 10.6.5, iTunes 10.1 (54). The initial problem (blank screen when I clicked Genius Mixes) occurred after I had added ~20 new tunes, then did an Update Genius. I was adding tunes from a CD and from Amazon at the same time. I've done this many times before and never had a problem. I now have 13,702 tunes. Did I pass some max number? I'm considering deleting all of the tunes I added in the last session, to see if that makes any difference, but haven't tried that yet.
I turned off Genius, then turned it back on. After doing so, I no longer see Genius Mixes on the left. I tried Daniel's fix several times. No joy.
I notice now, when I update Genius, that the "Gathering info about your library" takes significantly less time than it did before. Something appears to be sent to Apple and some Genius data back to me, as Genius works on SOME of my tunes. However, on other tunes where Genius worked before, I now get a "Genius is unavailable for the song..." message.
Please comment re what is the same or different for you. Maybe we can identify something in common.
Same problem, a day ago I added 10 tracks to my iTunes 10.1 (54) in OS X 10.6.5. Genius Mixes disappered but "normal Genius" works fine.
Tried everything said in forums, Safari cookies, import database from XML, check all tracks and update Genius, etc.
My collection has 5732 tracks in 41gb.
ditto what Gene said. although i don't have nearly as many tracks on my itunes. my library collection has 2300 tracks.
I'm having this same problem. I added an album to my computer, updated genius and it went blank!
I tried turning it off/on, and now the entire genius mix tab is gone. I don't know what to do. :(
Sheesh, same problem! No joy on over 20 fixes found online. This is ridiculous! No joy on the apple help line??
I have same problem. Seemed to start only after I started using the iPhone remote app, genius mixes folder. Maybe that's what triggered the blank screen.
Same stuff here. Tried everything found in newsgroups ford days: deleting-reimporting the library, doing all kinds of right clicks, buying TuneUp to update all names, playing mystical indian songs at full moon dancing on one foot... Nothing works. Genius seems to have stopped working after I've installed itunes on a second machine, with a different library, but the same Store account. However, deleting this second library did not solve the issue. Hey Apple! Can you please wake up!!! We're thousands moving to other apps because of stupid bugs like this and maybe also because like surround sound, flac, ogg, variable bit rates and mkv. We've adapted to your technical constraints and business strategies for years, it may be the time for your to adapt to our needs.
ROTFL... If playing mystical Indian songs at full moon dancing on one foot didn't work, we are in BIG trouble! ;^) FYI, iTunes does support variable bit rates. In Import Settings, Setting, choose Custom. This opens a MP3 encoder window that includes a box to check if you want to use VBR.
same here,
I googled about this prob,
and I found this,
no joy with above solutions,
DAMN! I WANT MY MIXES BACK!!!! RIGHT NOW!
Same problem here. Mine stopped working yesterday in the middle of a song, and then disappeared all together. I turned Genius off and back on and now the option in the left sidebar doesn't even show up. Google search found this thread.
Here's the Mac thread on it

Old news, but i got the same prob. Was syncing my 5th gen ipod nano one day and relized Genix mixes was gone. any suggestions yet?
Yeah guys, I tried Daniels solution a few times, not to much result. Also definitely not a track count issue as i have roughly 421Gig or 39,000 tracks. Took ages to get an answer back from apple and they had no solution. If anyone has any other ideas it would be muchly apprediated! Cheers guys, and merry (self-mixed) Xmas...
I've got the same problem. The reason for it:
I added the Song Bonny & Clyde (Jay-Z Beyonce) and the Symbol "&" caused the problem, that the mixes disappeard.....
I typed "and" instead of "&" and clicked "update genius" and now im pretty happy!! lol

Update: Just when I was done telling myself not to get worked up over this, the problem solved by itself. I absent-mindly updated the genius list since I added some new music to my collection, and BAM it's back.
I closed iTunes, reactivated Genius and then replaced the file “iTunes Library Genius.itdb” with an older version, which I saved at a time, when Genius-Mixe still worked.
Hey Guys!!!!
Mixes is Back!!!
just update genius then you will find your Joy again!
Woohoo! Thanks for the update.
I had all the same problems listed and could not find a solution.
Finaly I tried the following and it works. In music under library go to edit and "Select All" Right Click on entire selection and then click on "Tick Selection" (All music should be ticked) got to the Itunes Store and click "update Genius". after it all updates the Genius Mixes returns.
I Hope this helps as i spent ages trying to find this solution.
Troy's solution worked for me. I had almost none of my songs checked. But I do that for a reason. My iTouch is much less memory than all of my songs on the computer. What happens when you sync with all checked? I assume it loads songs until capacity. But I want to have my favorite songs sync on the iTouch but my Genius mixes cover all of my songs on the computer. What do people do in this case?
Look at the sync settings in iTunes with your device connected. There are lots of options to only sync certain artists playlists, etc. You could simply make a playlist for your iPod Touch and sync that one playlist -- even if it contains 1000s of songs.
Not sure if anyone has experienced this, but when I try to update my genius I get a message saying "We could not complete your itunes store request. An unknown error occurred (4002)"
The strange thing is that I can actually access the itunes store using the itunes store link on the sidebar!
So now my genius isn't working on my ipod or on itunes.
Suggestions?!!
Nevermind, I found the solution. Turned Genius off (under store menu) and then back on again. IT 101.
Typical!
This did the trick! I live on the island of Bonaire where obviously no apple stores, and getting my mixes back makes me very happy! Masha Danki!!!!!
