I am sure I used to be able to use ‘Command + i” to get information on a video file which it does but including the type, 720p, HD, 4K etc and the pixels in X and Pixels in Y. I don’t seem to see that anymore. How do I get to see if a Video file is 720p, 1080p or 4k? Thanks
I want to know if I have downloaded the right version, or the file is ‘as advertised’. Many down loads say HD but are 720pAnd 4k seem never to be that. For instruction videos, car videos Instruction videos etc.

When you use Command+i to bring up the Info window with a video file, the dimensions of the video are under the More Info section. If you don't see anything there, click on the little > button to the left of "More Info" to expand it.
You should see the dimensions, such as 1920x1080. That's width and height. So 1280x720 is what is known as 720p. 1920x1080 is 1080p, also known as HD. And 3840x2160 is what is known as 4K. Technically "HD" can be used to describe 720p or anything above that. So best to ignore "HD" and only care about the actual numbers.
Hi Gary. If you press this button, you get a small dropdown showing the date last opened only. Nothing else??
Jonathan: Maybe something wrong with that file. Try it on various video files.
Hi gary. I have tried 10 different ones from different sources. All just show date last opened. No info. I am sure 'used to' work. Did I turn something off? was it an upgrade thing to latest Mac version. Ie to Big Sur? Think I may have said wrong version initially?
Jonathan: Not sure why it isn't working for you then. Definitely works in the most recent version of Big Sur and I've never seen it not working. You can always open the video in QuickTime Player and check there.

Jonathan: It is definitely still there in the current version of Big Sur. Could be a problem with the videos you are trying (are they all from the same source, maybe?) But every video I look at I can see the video dimensions under More Info section of the Info window.
Jonathan, does it work when you use a different user account on the same computer? You can create a new user account to see if you do not already have one.
Hi Douglas - Well!!! It did so I went back to my account. To save drive space on my MacBook Pro the videos are stored on iCloud and also on an external NAS drive. Here they 'loose' the information. Copy one back to the download folder, there it is!!! I don't understand why. But the info ONLY works if the file is on the actual Mac, not any kind of external drive including iCloud!! Any thoughts Gary?
Jonathan: So this happens for files on an external drive, and for files on your internal drive stored in iCloud. First, what is the format of the external drive? Second, when you try it on an iCloud-stored file, is the file present, or no downloaded. Look for a cloud icon with a down arrow in it for the file.
Hi Gary. The external drive - I think is formatted for Mac's. Although I do also backup PC's to it so maybe FAT?? came perforated "for Mac' users. iCloud - They are downloaded not 'only on iCloud' so on my PC really I guess. They are MPEG-4 movie type
Jonathan: Check the format to see for sure. As for the iCloud files, if they are downloaded then I'm out of suggestions.
Hi Gary, not sure how to find 'formate' on the NAS drive, but did come with a TimeMachine backup directory installed. As to iCloud, is this the same for you? seems any mp4 video file ok on the PC in say Downloads, but not once in a iCloud directory even if on the PC. Many thanks for your help. I at least now know if I do need info on a file, copy to the backup directory and then see, then delete. :-)
Jonathan: In the Finder use Go, Computer. Select the drive. Command+i. Look for "Format."
As for iCloud Drive, I just looked at a video file that was not downloaded and "More Info" showed "--". I downloaded it and then More Info showed lots of information including Dimensions.
Wouldn't it be easier to just open it in QuickTime Player to see the dimensions, instead of copying the entire thing?
