You can't manually sort pictures in Events. They have to be sorted by time, title, keyword or rating. But you definitely can sort your albums. Just go to the album and make sure manual sort is on (View, Sort Photos). Then you can drag them around to change their order. This doesn't work with Smart Albums, naturally, as they are really saved searches and constantly updated.
I've been trying to figure this a long time. Worked perfectly.

Thanks Gary! This works perfectly. Is there a way to quickly reduce the size of photos within Iphoto rather than having to export them and then re-impor them?
Reduce the size? Do you mean reduce the file size (compress) the image or crop the photo?
If the first, then you don't want to do that. Think of iPhoto as your master archive of your photos. If you want to send a compressed copy, then just export and send it. But keep the full resolution around in iPhoto forever.
Thanks Gary! Another question....we have a 3 yr old at home and have taken TONS of video clips of her. They are all located in different events within iPhoto. These clips do take up a lot of memory. As we do not watch the clips regularly but do not want to delete, is there a way to locate all of these videos and place in another location like the back-up HD?
You can Right+Click or control+click on these in iPhoto and select "Show File." Then drag and drop them onto a disk image, external hard drive, burn folder, or whatever. I think you will then need to delete them from iPhoto after you copy them. Just do that for each one. At the same time you may want to rename these copies to filenames that will help you find them, since you will lose the description and tags that you may have had in iPhoto.
You can also arrange all the videos you want to archive in an Album to make them easier to gather for the archive. But that may make them harder to delete from iPhoto when you are done.
i really hate not being able to sort pictures manually in an event, i've been trying since long time but it didn't work coz the option "manually" is always grayed, i wish i can get a solution for this...

Hope you can help Gary! I just got my upgraded Iphone 5and I am unable to transfer the current albums from my iphone 4! Is there a simple way to do this? I am told that I need to install my photos on skydrive whatever that is!! Thanks
Depends on how you have things set up. Usually you would just restore the new phone from the backup of the old phone, then sync to get music, photos and apps from your Mac.
