Look where the Eject key would be (to the right of F12 and above the delete key). That's a key especially made for power shortcuts.

i pressed this key and it gives me the following options. restart, sleep, cancel and shutdown. what i am looking to do specifically is put the screen to sleep. i tried to use the keyboard shortcuts substituting the power key for the eject but that doesn't work. is there another option?

Ah, I see. There is none. But you can still set a Hot Corner for it. System Preferences, Desktop & Screen Saver, Screen Saver, look for the Hot Corners button.
