I’m experiencing the same problem with every 3rd party dialing app I download. This issue started after the 3.0 software update. Initially, I purchased a photo dialer app which I thought would really help trying to make a call while driving, which it did! I found it much easier, and safer, to glance at the screen and tap on a picture as opposed to scrolling through names in my favorites or contacts lists. Each time I ended a call, it would stay in the app and I could easily tap on another photo to make another call.
The problem I’m having is, each time I end a call now, it exits the app and takes me to the recent calls screen in the iPhone’s regular phone app. At first I thought the problem was with the app itself but recently I downloaded two additional dialer apps just to find out, and the exact same problem occurs with all of them. All three apps are from different developers, so I think it’s too much of a coincidence that the problem is with the apps. But I went ahead and emailed the developers to try to find out any information but, have yet to receive any kind of response from any of them.
I talked to Apple’s Tech Support to see if the problem might have been caused by the software update or some kind of restriction Apple placed on the 3rd party dialer developers that would cause this issue, and they told me they knew nothing about it. They suggested I send an email to apple.com/feedback to see if those folks could shed some light on the problem but, again, I haven’t heard back from anyone. I don’t know if anyone here has had this problem, I’m just trying to find out what is causing this to happen every time I make a call with any of the apps, and if there’s any way to correct it? It is extremely frustrating to be kicked out of the app after each call and then have to search for the next contact in the original phone app or exit that one and go back into one of the other dialer apps. Any of these options just takes too much time away from keeping your eyes on the road!! Any assistance/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think your instincts may be right and it may be a change in how the iPhone ends phone calls. But I'm surprised that you haven't heard back from the developers -- especially if it is a paid app. They should support their stuff.
Do you have an iPhone 3GS? The Voice Control feature is excellent for making calls with minimal interactivity. You don't even need to glance at your phone at all to do it.
I'm not surprised that tech support didn't know -- this is too specific of an issue for them. I'm sure if it is not in their database of standard issues, then the person on the phone doesn't know.
No, I've still got my 3G. I'm still kickin' around the thought of getting the 3Gs but, this is the first real problem I've had with the phone in over a year and I was hoping to hang on to it for a while longer. This whole issue wouldn't bother me so much except for the fact that I never had this problem occur prior to the 3.0 update! Prior to that, the app worked great. All three of the apps I've tried were paid apps, and I can't believe I'm the only person this is happening to, or the first person to contact Apple about it? Oh well, I'll give it awhile longer to see if someone at Apple will bother to respond to my question, NOTHING ELSE HAS WORKED SO FAR.
