Apple stock has dropped almost 25 percent over the last few weeks due to news that suppliers of iPhone parts have cut production, leading analysts to think that iPhone demand is slowing. In addition, Apple announced that they will no longer be breaking out numbers for product sales categories in their quarterly reports, a move not received well on Wall Street. (more...)

Search A Specific Website With Quick Website Search
11/20/18
You can search a specific website using Safari's address field and Quick Website Search. Make sure this feature is enabled and then you can check the list of sites already added. You can add most other sites by performing a native search at that site. Once added, when you type the domain name of that site and a search term you then have the option to search that site directly instead of through a search engine. This works on Mac and iOS.

iOS Control Center Hidden Buttons
11/19/18
The Control Center on iOS is very useful, yet many people don't use it to quickly access common functions. There are many buttons that you can add to Control Center that add even more. If you have an iPhone or iPad you should take the time to look at all of the buttons to get the most from your device.

Apple updated Final Cut Pro to 10.4.4 and Motion and Compressor as well. The biggest new feature is allowing third-party services like Frame.io and Shutterstock hook directly into FCP to add new features. For instance, Frame.io comments can appear directly in the timeline and Shutterstock media can be searched right inside the app. (more...)

Technical Terms: Bandwidth
11/16/18
The term Bandwidth is used to describe data transferred over time. However, it is often misused to define a limit on total data transfer. Bandwidth is measured in bits per second, usually using kilo or mega-bits to make the numbers more reasonable. Marketing departments often distort bandwidth to only show maximum or one-sided numbers.

Did you know about the Grapher app that comes with your Mac? Well, even if you did, did you know it can animate graphs? And you can export them as videos?

Some Siri functions could be available offline in the future. Apple Insider discovered a patent filing that suggests Apple is working on this. Currently, you need an Internet connection to use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or HomePod. (more...)

If you have a lot of tabs open in Safari, you can search though them to quickly find the tab you need. First, enter Tab Overview mode with View, Show Tab Overview or Command+Shift+\ (backslash). Then use Edit, Find, Find or Command+F to open the search field. Now type a keyword to search the titles of the tabs. You’ll also get results from your other devices if you are using iCloud.

Easier Ways To Open File With
11/15/18
The Open With command makes it possible to open a file with something other than the default app. But if you commonly need to do this with a specific app there are three ways to make it much easier to open the file with that app instead of the default. You could just drag it to the Dock icon for the app, add the app icon to the Finder toolbar, or create a keyboard shortcut.
How To Set the Default Font in Pages
11/14/18
Often people want to know how they can change the default font in Pages. But there is no default font. Instead, when you create a new document you are using a template, often the template named Blank. So if you'd rather start with a different font, then just create a new template that is a variation of the Blank one, and use that template instead.

Reports are coming in that many people today had to verify their ID to log into their Apple accounts today. Both Apple Insider and MacRumors are reporting this, though headlines make it seem as if people are “locked out” of their accounts, when in fact they have simply been logged out of their accounts and need to verify their ID and/or change passwords to get back in. Choosing the Right MacBook For You
11/13/18
With the new MacBook Air the MacBook line is stable for the next few months, making this a good time to buy a new MacBook. But which one is right for you? The MacBook is the lightest, the MacBook Air is the least expensive and good middle-ground, and the MacBook Pro is the most powerful with several major options. There are several factors that can help you decide. You should always make a trip to a store to compare them for yourself as there is no substitute for hands-on experience.
Customize macOS Dock Hiding
11/12/18
If you have the Dock set to automatically hide, then you may not like the default amount of time it takes for the Dock to appear, and the speed of the animation. You can customize these by using the Terminal to change two hidden macOS preferences. You can delay the appearance of the Dock so that you can access other items at the bottom of your screen. You can also speed up or eliminate the animation if you find it is too slow for you.

Years ago, one of the places you could buy Macs was at Amazon.com. But since then all you may find was a handful of odd resellers with used and older models, a few select items from Apple resellers, and a small selection from Apple. But that will change soon as CNET is reporting an official deal between Apple and Amazon. (more...)

This is something I created for my Mojave course that I also wanted to share with my newsletter subscribers. It is a one-page PDF that you can print with quick how-to tips for macOS. These are answers to some of the most commonly-asked questions from Mac users. The descriptions are very short and meant to quickly guide you to a solution, rather than provide a detailed step-by-step explanation.

Need to view more than one note at a time in the Mac Notes app? Select a note and then choose Window, Float Selected Note. It will open in another window and you can still view different notes in the main window. You can open as many windows as you like to compare or manage the information in your notes.

Recreating the All My Files Finder List
11/8/18
Prior to High Sierra there was a Finder sidebar item called All My Files. This showed you a big list of all of your documents. This was replaced with the Recents list, which only shows documents you have opened and leaves out files you have created or downloaded, but haven't opened yet. You can easily re-create the All My Files list by making a Smart Folder and adding it to the Finder sidebar. You can customize this Smart Folder to better fit your needs.

The new Pages 7.3 released today gives writers the ability to publish a book directly from Pages to Apple Books. The new option in the File menu hooks directly into your iTunes Connect account if you have set yourself up as an Apple Books creator. Previously Apple offered a separate app, iBooks Author for this, which is still the only way to produce books that use some advanced features. (more...)
