What’s the best way to keep track of updates available for my non-App Store apps? I’ve used MacUpdater but would like to confirm if that’s the best option.
I want to ensure my apps are up-to-date to always get new features and security patches.

You shouldn't need to do anything specific for that. I'm not familiar with any app like the one you mentioned, but I wouldn't install an app like that on my Mac.
Every app I can think of that I use from outside the Mac App Store has its own built-in software update feature. When a new version is available, it prompts you in the app. Do you find you have any apps that do not do this?
For those that don't keep their apps up-to-date, the issue is ignoring these requests to update, not being unaware of them.

I just like to discover new releases for my installed apps, even if I don’t open them regularly. An update with a new feature sometimes is the trigger I need to start using an app again.

Bernardo: I agree, but you don't need another app for that. When you launch an app, if there is an update it should tell you and give you the chance to explore the new features. I have a lot of apps, both from the App Store and from other sites, and they all do this.
