You can't really share the address book file. It is in a location that can only be accessed by one user. If you move it, then Address Book won't find it there and will simply start a new one.
The standard way to share the address book across your Macs is with MobileMe.
If you don't want to use MobileMe to do it, then I have heard of people working with Google Apps to share addresses across computers, but I don't think it will work like you want it to.
I've used AddressBook File > Export > Archive, saved to a flash drive, and then restored to another user / another computer. It's not auto-update, but good enough for what I needed.

Hi Gary,
Given that mobileMe is going away, do you know of any other way of sharing Address Book with another mac on my home network? My partner has a macbook pro, and I have an Imac.
Thanks very much.
The Address Book syncing is one of the features being carried over to iCloud.
