I often sort in Finder using ‘Date Modified’ and I’ve noticed that when I update a file, the parent folder’s ‘Date Modified’ does not update. Is there a way I could change this setting so that every folder will have the Date Modified equal to the most recently modified file it contains. (note: this is on a Snow Leopard machine, not sure about behavior in Lion)

Good question, but I don't have a good answer. That's always the way it has worked.
More info: If you update a file, the date of the folder it is in does get updated, just not the folder above that, which is what I want...
