Transferring mp4 files from camera to iPad

I bought an Apple camera connection kit so that i could directly load photos and video from my digital camera to my iPad while on vacation.

Photos load onto the iPad soon after I insert the SD card with the card connector into the iPad. No problem with the photos.

But the video files do not. I can import the video files into iTunes, then sync my iPad. But I was hoping that I could load the video files onto the iPad as easily and as directly as I can the photo files.

Any help appreciated.

The iPad can't play back just any video format. It must be a supported format or you can't play it. It will act as a transportation device in all cases, though, allowing you to transfer the video back to your computer.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4101
You can see the specification for which video formats are supported in the middle of this page:

I don't think there are any. The iPad can only play back very specific formats that the iPad hardware can handle with little battery and processor drain. If you can find a camera that saves directly to QuickTime or h264/mp4, it might work. But I wouldn't be surprised if not a single one does it just right.
