What is the best way to go from iPhoto to an external editor?

I want to use Pixelmator or Elements to edit photos in iPhoto, but I really don’t want to export/import them every time. Is there an “edit with an external editor” option I haven’t found?

Yes, there is. Go to iPhoto preferences. Under the General tab, look for "Edit Photo:" an select the pop-up menu. It should give you the option to select an external editor. Point it to another app. Then, when you press the Edit button in iPhoto it will launch that app and allow you to edit the photo with it.

Ok. I've got that set up. But now when i edit it in pixelmator, I haven't found any way to have it save and go back to iPhoto. It wants to save it as a new file. Any ideas?

Perhaps pixelmator isn't compatible with iPhoto? I don't use an external editor for iPhoto, but I do for other programs. And usually the new version gets put back.
