Can I Backup a MacBook Pro To iCloud Maybe Using Time Machine?

Hi Gary. I now have fibre to my house so some reasonable internet speeds (300 download, 51 upload). Can I look to dump my USB Disc Drives and backup (using TimeMachine) to iCloud? I appreciate I would need to have the 2TB subscription. Are there any Pros and Cons, assuming the internet is on?

You can't do that with Time Machine. It is a local backup. Apple doesn't offer a true online backup solution. But there are third-party options. I use Backblaze for instance.

And there's no reason you can't use both. If you find it inconvenient to connect your Time Machine drive to your MacBook Pro, then maybe go with an inline backup but try to connect your Time Machine drive at night or once a week as a second backup.

You can also connect your Time Machine drive to your network if your network Wi-Fi router supports it. Then it will back up to Time Machine when you are on that same Wi-Fi network.

Thank you! A quick followup. How do I know if my router can support this, and can multiple Mac's 'hookup' to these two drives?

Jonathan: Check your documentation. Well, first see if it has a USB port, because if it doesn't then game over. But if it does look in the docs to see how to configure a network drive attached to it. If you find instructions on how to do that, then bingo. If not, then it probably doesn't support it.

Thanks Gary. No usb!! So get a NAS (that's a network drive - correct?) Drive maybe? The question then becomes - if I get a large NAS drive, can that support multiple MacBook Pro (only 2) computers backing up - via Time Machine to the same Drive?

Jonathan: Yes. I have a drive connected to my Wi-Fi router and have three MacBook pros in my house all set to back up to it.
