The remote for my boys’ Apple TV finally died. I went to order a replacement, but there is a new remote in its place. Will this still work with the first generation Apple TV?

Yes. It is just a new design. But the remote is basically the same.
If you look at the product page at Apple's site it reads:
"Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver."
That would include both models of Apple TV.
