Gary, I just gifted my old iPhone 3G to my daughter. Will she be able to download iOS 4 to the device? However, I assume that iOS 5 will not be an option? Finally, will she be able to get a Verizon SIM card to replace the AT&T card that is onboard?

iOS 4 does work on the iPhone 3G, but some of the iOS 4 features do not. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4204
All 3G models were GSM phones. Verizon is not a GSM network, but a CDMA one. So the hardware inside a 3G is not compatible with the Verizon network. The same is even true for the iPhone 4. There is a GSM version for AT&T and a CDMA version for Verizon. You have to have the right version for the right network.
