screen brightness in Mac Book Pro

I have recently noticed that the screen brightness is high and when I try to adjust it nothing happens except that when I reduce it to the minimum it goes black. In other words it is either very bright or it goes black. I have checked the settings and they are much the same as they have always been. I simply want to reduce the brightness a little so it doesn’t dazzle my eyes.
