once, i tried to dual-boot my vista into my mac and couldn’t connect to the internet(im using linkysys by the way) but when i tried to return my mac to vista again i couldn’t i wanted to keep my files. it took me 4 hours! thats not the problem.
here is the problem:
i’m planning to buy a mac from my friend but i don’t want to waste my money because if i can’t connect my macbook to my linksys then its useless any ideas on how to get the wifi connection icon or do i need to buy something.

I'm not completely certain what you are looking for. Just the icon in the menu bar that allows you to select a wifi network? You can show that, in case it is hidden, by selecting an option in the network preferences. Just select the wifi connection and you'll see it as a checkbox.
But it sounds like you are worried about something else -- maybe general connectivity? Linksys routers don't care which kind of computer you have. A Mac is the same as a PC. You just have to make sure the network preferences are set properly for either.
want i meant is how to get the wifi icon on a macbook
Do you mean the icon in the menu bar at the top right side of the screen?
yes
OK. Then you just need to go to System Preferences, Network, and select the Airport network. Then Look for "Show AirPort status in menu bar." Check that box.
do you need to buy airport extreme or can i use my router (linksys)
You can use any brand of standard WiFi router. I've used many Linksys routers in the past.
