A friend of mine asked: “Is there an equivalent to the delete key that removes a character to the right of the cursor? The delete key itself functions like the backspace; so I have been moving the cursor to the right of what I want to erase and then press delete.”

If you have a full Apple keyboard (with numeric keypad) then you have a second delete key two down from F13. This will delete from the right when you are editing text.
If you have a smaller keyboard, try fn+delete -- that should delete from the right also.
Whenever I use a mac I always use fn+delete shortcut. Honestly though it's a function I rarely find myself using. Even on a windows machine with the dedicated key.
