What was the update, specifically? Was it from Software update or from another source (like Adobe's or Microsoft's auto-update system)? Did the update go smoothly? This may not even be related to the update.
Have you tried the basics? Log out and log back in? Restart?
If you have done all that then you must simply choose between visiting a Mac expert to have them look at it (Genius Bar, etc) or doing an OS X re-install from the discs.

Thanks for the reply. It was a software update and it took a long time (50 mins to an hour) Everything seemed to go well as I received no warning windows. It auto shut down and restarted upon me hitting the restart now button on the install window. tried the usual fix for a man of my capabilities( shut down, log out, pull the power and dropped the battery). When you say reinstall I assume you mean the OS X disks and systems, not the Office and Adobe disks. Also If I do this I need to back up all files correct? Once again thank you for your help and to let you know I found out about your web sight fro a You tube broadcast you did.
