A slow news week was interrupted only by Apple’s announcement of the sale of its 25 billionth song on iTunes, the introduction of the AppStore.com domain name during a Superbowl commercial, and an OS X Server update.
The only real event of the week was the launch of the 128GB iPad in Apple Stores, which had been announced the previous week.
Rumors were active, as usual, with the idea of a new Mac Pro surfacing again. The current Mac Pro will no longer be sold in Europe starting March 1 due to regulatory issues, giving more credence to rumors of a new model coming soon. In fact, one report pegs the arrival as soon as this spring.

If you use Safari’s Bookmarks Bar you may not realize that you are also setting up keyboard shortcuts. The first nine bookmarks in the bar, not including bookmark folders, are mapped to Command+1 to Command+9. This makes it even easier to get to your favorite sites.

If you are using a MacBook or have a Magic Trackpad, then the handy three-finger swipe upward gesture may be the best way to switch between apps. Do this and you can quickly see all of the apps you have running and click one to jump to it. You can even pick the specific window you want to jump to.

Clash of the Clans combines the elements from a build-your-city game with those of a strategy war game. You get to create your village and defend it too. It is free to start, but you must purchase gems to speed up gameplay or you will want a very long time for things to happen. Still, it is fun and well made.

This week Apple released iOS version 6.1. In addition to stability and security fixes, the new version also supports LTE connectivity for more carriers, allows movie tickets to be bought through Siri, and lets iTunes Match users download individual songs. Another noted change is a large “Report a Problem” button in the Maps app, a sign that Apple is looking for feedback to help improve the data.
Apple also announced a new model to the iPad line. The new one is another version of the 4th generation iPad that has 128GB of storage, up from the previous maximum of 64GB. It will be available on Feb. 5.
There was also an update to Apple TV this week, with a new 5. 2 version of that operating system adding the ability to stream iTunes purchased music directly from Internet, use Bluetooth keyboards, and send audio from Apple TV over AirPlay to other devices. Rumors of a new Apple TV model were both squashed and confirmed by Apple as the company stated that there will be a model update, but the changes will be internal only and not include any new features.

I created this app because I like trivia games, but hate what they have become in the app store. Each game has a complex system of levels or tokens, usually involving repeated in-app purchases. I wanted just a simple free game where you could answer trivia questions to test your knowledge. So I created Trivia Game, even using a generic name to underscore its simplicity. Answer 10 questions as quickly as you can and get a score.

If you are in the Open dialog of an application you can select a file or folder and then jump to that location in the Finder by pressing Command+R. This is useful if you are searching for a file and decide to continue the search in the Finder instead. You can do the opposite, placing a Finder location in an Open dialog by dragging and dropping a file or folder into the dialog.

Apple reported more than $54 billion in revenue in the previous quarter, $13 billion in profit. This was from almost 48 million iPhone sales, almost 23 million iPads, almost 13 million iPods and more than 4 million Macs. Lower iMac sales were apparently due to inventory problems as the new iMac models were only available in very limited numbers.
Apple’s stock price was down sharply this morning as Wall Street expected more iPhone sales, and Apple’s guidance for the next quarter were below expectations.
Apple TV had a good year in 2012 with 2 million units being sold in the final quarter. Including media purchases and rentals using Apple TV, it is estimated that the device is now a $500 million business.
Apple did well in 2012 with cloud services. The number of iCloud users reportedly grew from 85 to 250 million during the year. iMessage accounts for about 2 billion messages sent each day.
In other news, the movie jOBS is scheduled to come to theaters on April 19. stars. The Steve Jobs biopic stars Ashton Kutcher and will show at the Sundance Film Festival tomorrow.
