Best Software to capture footage from to edit in Imovie?

Hi Gary,

I have a previously burned dvd that I can’t back up using Disk Utility or rip form Mac the Ripper – the former fails after a while and the latter doesn’t recognise the disk in the drive. But the vob is playing fine from the Video folder. Any solution?
Also, what is your personal recommendation for an open source software for ripping dvd directly to avi? Or whatever’s best to take footage from a dvd to edit on IMovie?

Handbrake is what I would try. But don't go to AVI, that might be the worst possible format to take I to iMovie.. Go to a QuickTime format, with h264.

I use handbrake and just specify the resolution. Lately it has been iPad. Next I use ffmpegx to compress the file even more. I chose the H.264 x264 format. Works well with Mac, MS and VLC viewers.

The apple the software does not generate small files which is why I use ffmpegx to compress the file even further.

I agree with Gary. I've been using Handbrake for quite a while now, and it works really great. Plus it converts from more than just VOB files.
