Masking Video In Keynote With a Donut
2/19/19
It is easy to put an image in a shape and mask the image using Keynote. But you cannot do the same with video. However, you can place a shape or image on top of a video. So by using the right shape, like the donut shape, editing it, and positioning it just right, you can put video in a circular mask.

The renown financial analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is speculating once again and the rumors sites are eating it up. Two far-fetched rumors have Apple re-entering two markets it has left: large laptops and desktop displays. A new MacBook Pro with a display as large as 16.5-inches could be Apple’s largest laptop since it stopped making the 17-inch model in 2012. A 31.6-inch 6K display could come out later this year, possibly to be used by a future Mac Pro. However, 5K displays have been out for a while they are hard to find as most people opt for the much more reasonable-priced 4K displays.
When Does the Mac Red Button Quit an App and When Does It Just Close a Window?
2/18/19

When you click the red button at the top left corner of a window on a Mac, you close that window. But sometimes this also quits the app entirely. There is a logic behind this, based on how the app operates. Apps that allow multiple windows for multiple documents usually only use the red button to close a window. But apps that normally operate with a single window and have no other reason to stay open, will quit.

Did you know there is a simple shutdown command you can use in the Terminal to put your Mac to sleep, restart it, or shut it down. Better yet, you can set this to happen at a specific time or at a certain number of minutes in the future. That could be very useful in some situations.

4 Ways To Type Superscript and Subscript On a Mac
2/15/19

If you need to raise characters above or lower them below the baseline, you can do it one of four ways. This is typically used in mathematical equations and chemical formulas. You can use the baseline adjustments in many apps, special superscript and subscript characters, commonly-recognized symbols, and the equation editor in Pages.

If you don’t understand what iCloud is or how to use it, you are not alone. As someone that helps people with their Apple products every day, this is one of the topics I am asked about the most.
Using and Customizing iPhone iCloud Backup
2/14/19

By default your iPhone will be backed up wirelessly to iCloud using iCloud Backup. Most iPhone users probably don't even know they have this turned on, but it will save them if they lose their iPhone. You can see how much space your iPhone backups are using and customize your backup. You can remove data from apps that you don't really need to be backed up.

When you compose an email in the iOS Mail app, you get a little bell icon next to the subject. Tap that to activate a special feature where you will get an iOS notification when someone replies to that message. Unfortunately, this only works on iOS, not Mac.

Rumors for a special March 25 event grow and now Bloomberg is reporting that it will include Apple’s new video service too. Some of the stars of Apple’s upcoming shows are being invited, including big names such as Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner and JJ Abrams.
Mojave Screen Capture Options

added significant functionality to how we can control what happens after we take screenshots. While the default keyboard shortcuts remain the same, we can now choose where a screenshot is saved, or if the screenshot should automatically go to an app instead of a file. This allows you to easily name screenshots, delete ones we don't want without ever saving them, and even mark them up before saving.

Many rumors circulated today of a late March Apple event, though what products Apple may announce varied a great deal. While new iPads or AirPods were one idea, most sites claimed this was unlikely. BuzzFeed centered in on a new-oriented subscription service that could let users pay a single monthly fee to access paywalled sources like the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal.
Using SVG Graphics In Pages and Keynote
2/12/19

SVG images have been around for a while and are widely used on websites and in clipart collections. But you cannot import an SVG file into Pages or Keynote directly, without first converting it using professional software. But since Safari handles SVG images without a problem, and you can export as a PDF from Safari, you can use Safari to convert the image to a format that can then be used inside Pages and Keynote documents.

Creating Animation With Keynote Magic Move
2/11/19

Instead of using a simple transition from one slide to the next, you can use Magic Move which will animate objects from one position to another between slides. These animations can be more directly controlled by adding slides in the middle of the animation. Items that are added or removed from slides will fade in and out gracefully. These animations can be used in presentations or videos.

There are tons of special symbols and characters, and plenty of good ways to type them on your Mac. But as a coder, I couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to type a character by its unique number, rather than search for it in the special characters list. Turns out you can add a special Unicode input option on your Mac. Then you can hold the Option key and type the 4-character code for anything to produce that character. Geeky, I know, but I kinda like it.

4 Common Mistakes Mac Users Make When Trying To Search For Files
2/8/19

It is common to hear a Mac user complain that the file search function in macOS Finder doesn't find files they know are present. The reason is often that the user has made one of these mistakes. When searching for a file, the search usually starts in the folder in which the user is currently looking. You need to change the scope of your search to look elsewhere as well. By default, searches look in the content of files as well as the file names, but you can narrow your search to only the file names. If you are looking for something other than a file's content or name, you need to start the search differently. Many users search for files using Spotlight, but if you know you want a file, then it is better to search with the Finder.

Apple issued an update today for iOS devices and macOS to fix a bug that allowed callers to activate FaceTime calls without the recipient’s action. The update, version 12.1.4 for iOS and Mojave 10.14.3 Supplemental Update for Mac, will be rolling out over the course of the day to all users.

Ever close a window or tab in Safari and then wish you could get back to it a few minutes later. History, Last Closed Tab will work in some cases, but if you closed a few tabs you can still find older ones in History. Recently Closed.

A security researcher posted a video of a piece of malware he developed that could be used to access parts of a Mac’s Keychain. However, instead of informing Apple of the issue and how to reproduce it so Apple can fix it, he is holding back in protest since Apple does not offer bounties for reporting such bug on macOS.
