When you strike the volume up or down key on your keyboard you get a “pop” sound as the volume changes. This can make matters worse when you are quickly trying to lower the volume of your Mac without disturbing anyone. You can turn these feedback sounds off by going to System Preferences, Sound, Sound Effects and switching off “Play feedback when volume is changed.”

Rymdkapsel is an addictive strategy game were you build a platform in space while defending it against attacks. It is part city-builder: you need to create quarters and food to attract a population. It is part puzzle: you need to build platforms to extend to other parts of the play area. Don’t expect amazing graphics, as it is all pixels and shapes, but that doesn’t seem to matter as it is a much more interesting game than most of the stuff with cute characters and scenery.

MacMost Now 903: Using URL Shorteners
8/12/13
When sharing links with friends, long URLs can cause issues as they take up a lot of space in tweets and text messages, and can wrap across multiple lines in emails. You can use one of the many free URL shortening services to turn any URL into a very short one. These will redirect to the original page. The danger in using URL shorteners is that you can't be certain where a link leads. But browser extensions and the URL shortening services can help with that.
MacMost Now 902: Removing the Dashboard
8/9/13
While the Dashboard and Widgets are neat and can be very useful to some, not everyone uses them. If you find yourself accidentally triggering the Dashboard every once in a while, you can easily disable the keyboard shortcut and gesture that brings it up. You can also remove widgets from the Dashboard so it uses less resources. As an extreme measure, you can completely disable the Dashboard with a command in the Terminal window.

In response to several accidents caused by poorly-made third-party chargers, Apple is offering a program that will help people upgrade to official chargers. Starting August 16, you can bring those adapters to Apple Stores and exchange them for Apple ones for $10. Here’s the official page for the program: http://www.apple.com/support/usbadapter-takeback/
Giving kids iOS devices has been getting more difficult as these devices rely more and more on iCloud which has been closed off to those under 13. But Apple took a big step in fixing the problem by changing the iTunes terms and conditions to allow kids to have Apple accounts, at least if it is part of their school’s program. You can read more here: http://www.apple.com/ios/ios7/education/.

Ever wish that in Angry Birds you could control the flight of the birds by dragging them around after they launch? Ever wish that the piggies were vampires instead, that can be killed by light? Ever wish that some of the birds could travel through glass or cause boards and rocks to become weightless? Well, that’s quite a coincidence because it pretty much describes Lums, a fun puzzler.

MacMost Now 900: Manually Managing Media On Your iOS Device
8/5/13
Instead of using sync settings to decide what music to put on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can set iTunes to let you manually drag and drop music and video into your device. This lets you have finer control over exactly which songs are on the device. You can also get media on to your device without it needing to be in your iTunes library. Another advantage is that you can transfer media from a second Mac to your device without needing to erase the existing media.

Here’s an interesting take on a calculator app. Instead of tapping out numbers on a keypad, you write them with your finger. But what is really interesting about MyScript Calculator is that you don’t have to write out straight forward formulas like 1+2=. You can write things like 7x?+10=115 and it will fill in the ? with the correct number.

The middle of the summer means no real news from Apple. But rumor sites are filling the void with speculation. It looks like Apple news this fall will be mostly about iOS products, with a new iPhone and iPad expected at some point.
The most contentious rumors are about whether there will be a low-cost version of the iPhone. Some sites claim it will be a plastic-case version, while others claim it will not exist at all. Another debate is whether we will see a new iPad mini model, and if that model will have a retina display or not.
One thing we do know is that the next version of iOS and the next version of OS X are in beta development right now and being used by developers worldwide. We’ll certainly see both of these in the coming months, regardless of what new hardware comes out.
